The last statement of US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volcker, in particular, the statement that there is a "hot war" in the east of the country, can be regarded as "a real chance to change the situation for the benefit of moving forward" in resolving the conflict.
Such an opinion was expressed by the ex-Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Igor Romanenko.
Answering the question whether the statement of the representative of the United States means that moves are possible in the matter of the war in the Donbass, the general said: "At least for the near future I see this as a real chance to change the situation for the benefit of moving forward to end the war".
In this context, he recalled that during the three years of the war the Minsk agreement did not lead to the desired result. As one of the reasons, Romanenko calls the "serious economic dependence" of the EU leaders - France and Germany - on Russia, and "the Russian Federation uses all-round pressure on the leaders of these states".
In this context, the general said: "Macron, who allegedly comes forward with new positions and voices the five points of the new plan, in fact repeats the starting points of the Minsk agreements, with which the Ukrainian side already agrees: ceasefire, exchange of prisoners, the withdrawal of troops ... But, As we know, the Russian side is very arrogant about the participants in the process, so there has not been a change in all that time, "he stated..
At the same time Romanenko drew attention to the fact that "Volker always took a rather Euro-Atlantic position, in some ways - pro-Ukrainian". Thus, "there is a hope that he, at least, will objectively approach these circumstances and will be able to find approaches". The objective approach of the US representative to what is happening in the east of the country, in particular, is also evidenced by his words about the "hot phase" of the war,.
"Ukraine should actively interact with US representatives, explain what is really happening in the conflict zone, and continue to work further. This is a promising direction for improving the situation, "Romanenko.
