China Mobile, SAIC Motor and Huawei demonstrated the world's first remote control technology for a passenger car, based on the fifth generation mobile network (5G).

As part of the experiment, Huawei provided a wireless solution 5G, which provided the connection of the "clever" concept car of the company SAIC Motor - iGS machines. The operator of China Mobile, in turn, provided communication services.

The iGS car was equipped with several high-resolution cameras, the image of which was passed to the driver, who was more than 30 kilometers from the car. The 5G network allowed to create a real-time panorama with a 240-degree coverage angle. Such a survey exceeds the field of vision of a person, which on average is about 180-190 degrees.

Control commands were transmitted to the steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals, and the 5G network provided the ultra-small delay required for instant response in various road situations. The driver managed to constantly maintain full control over the car, although it was at a considerable distance.

During tests, the ultra-high capacity of the 5G network provided the required speed for the uninterrupted transmission of HD video between the vehicle and the driver. The delay time between the end points for all the functions of the vehicle control system was less than 10 milliseconds (the own delay in the new 5G air interface was less than one millisecond).

The technology of remote control of a vehicle can find application in various fields. This can be, for example, road works, the performance of certain tasks in adverse or dangerous conditions, etc..
