F-16 fighters, who accompanied the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on the Baltic Sea on June 21, belong to the Polish Ministry of Defense.
This was reported by the Polish radio station RMF.
According to the Polish media, two fighters patrolling the Baltic States within the framework of the NATO mission received an alarm signal in connection with the flight of Russian aircraft near the borders of the Alliance. The fighters escorted three targets - the unarmed Tu-154 and two Su-27 fighters accompanying it, armed with air-to-air missiles.
The Polish Ministry of Defense stressed that the escort was carried out in accordance with NATO procedures.
As reported by the "Observer", NATO planes twice a day accompanied the flight of Sergei Shoigu over the Baltic Sea.
"Since the planes did not identify themselves and did not respond to the controllers, NATO fighters were taken to the air for interception in accordance with standard procedures," the Alliance commented.
Later, a video of the incident over neutral waters appeared.
