The 8th Odessa International Film Festival will be held from July 14 to 22. July 15 on the Potemkin Stairs will take place the traditional open-air cinema. This is one of the largest open-air-shows in Europe, which annually attracts more than 15 thousand spectators. This year Odessa citizens and guests of the city will be shown the silent film of the French director Julien Duvivier "The Lady's Happiness" (1930). The show will be held under the musical design of the Canadian composer Gabriel Tibodo, the vocal parts will be performed by soloist Sophie Fourier.
"Lady's Happiness" - one of the last dumb French films, based on the novel of the same name by Emile Zola. This is the real gem of the French silent cinema, which remained unvalued until the restoration of the picture in the early 21st century. According to the story, the events unfold in a department store called "Lady's Happiness", the film was shot on the territory of the Parisian landmark - in the oldest shopping center Galeries Lafayette.
Director of the film was the winner of the Venice Film Festival Julien Duvivier, a representative of the "Big Five" leading French directors of the 1930s, along with Jean Renoir, Marcel Carne, Ren Cler and Jacques Fader. Julien Duvivier - author of more than 70 films. It was Duvivier who formed the cinematic image of the actor Jean Gaben, who brought the latter worldwide fame. The painting by the French director Pele le Moco (1936) is considered one of the first films created in the style of noir. The main role in "The Lady's Happiness" was played by the star of European cinema of the first half of the 20th century Dita Parlo, known for the film masterpieces "Atalanta" (directed by Jean Vigo) and "The Great Illusion" (directed by Jean Renoir).
The original musical accompaniment to "Lady's happiness" was lost. In Odessa, the film will be shown under the compositions of the Canadian Gabriel Tibodot, who previously wrote music for the silent film Duvivier "Redhead" (1925) and the painting "The Phantom of the Opera" (1925, directed by: Rupert Julian, Lon Chaney, Ernst Lemmle, Edward Sedgwick). Also in the performance will be the French opera singer Sophie Fournier (mezzo-soprano), who performed at the stages of Singapore, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, Slovenia and other countries.
For the first time in the history of the Odessa Film Festival, the show on the Potemkin Stairs will be held in conjunction with a symphony orchestra and vocalist.
Recall that recently it became known about the change of one of the locations of the Odessa International Film Festival - instead of Langeron's descent, open-air-shows will be held in the "Stella Artois Green Theater".
