Currently, the prospects for Ukraine's entry into NATO look rather illusive because of the mood of the US president, but Russia's aggressive policy can force Donald Trump to reconsider his views on Ukraine and other countries seeking Alliance membership, so their number can quickly increase from 29 to 40.
This opinion was expressed to the "Observer" by the chairman of the All-Ukrainian public organization "Ukraine in NATO", member of the Atlantic Council of Ukraine Yuri Romanyuk.
First of all, the expert stressed: "All this talk about Ukraine allegedly not meeting the criteria of NATO is absurd. This is a diplomatic screen behind which to hide, to save face and not offend anyone. For example: the army of Montenegro, which has just joined NATO, does not exceed the number of servicemen of the Ukrainian army in the city of Kolomiya. Actually, the reason is not that. The main reason is war, corruption in the country, unresolved problems of borders with Russia ".
At the same time, Romanyuk acknowledged: to join the Alliance Ukraine needs a "locomotive" in the form of the United States and Great Britain. In particular, support is needed at the level that Ukraine was provided by Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
According to the expert, today's head of the White House does not set itself the task of Ukraine's membership in NATO, but his position may change, and the president of Russia will help him in this. "Most likely, Putin will do everything to Trump's position has changed. Optimism in this is added 59 missiles "Tomahawk", which were released on the Syrian military airfield. Trump had to do it - Putin and Assad. The same is true here. I think Putin will drive to NATO from dozens of countries, and the Alliance will soon have not 29 members, but 40, "Romanyuk admitted..
As the "Observer" wrote, on June 8 the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the bill No. 6470 on amendments to the legislation regarding the resumption of the course of Ukraine for membership in NATO.
