American start-up called Amber Garage developed a cardboard helmet of augmented reality, which is a cheap analog of the Microsoft Hololens device.

The set, called Holokit, includes a folding cardboard frame, two mirrors and so-called Fresnel lenses. After the assembly in the headset you need to install a smartphone, but so far the helmet is compatible only with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and Android-enabled devices with Project Tango.

A small video showing the assembly of a cardboard helmet and its capabilities was published on Vimeo. Judging by the video, Holokit is noticeably inferior to Holo's Augmented Reality objects or Magic Leap developments, but the difference is more than offset by the Holokit price, which is likely to be comparable to the price of the Google Cardboard virtual reality cardboard helmet ($ 5-15 Depending on the version). The Holokit helmet sales will begin in June.

Recall that the helmet of augmented reality Microsoft Hololens was announced in early 2015. The device has its own CPU and GPU and does not require connection to an external computer system, and also supports voice commands.

In August last year, a preliminary version of the Microsoft helmet was made available to companies and developers from the US and Canada. The cost of the device is three thousand dollars.
