The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the bill No. 5534 on introducing amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine (regarding the rules for calculating punishments and recording the period of preliminary detention).

This decision was supported by 227 people's deputies.

According to the document, pre-trial detention will be counted by the court in case of imprisonment in the term "day after day". Thus, the norm that was in effect until the adoption of the so-called "Savchenko law" is returned, which obliged the courts to take into account the convicts every day spent in pre-trial detention centers, as two days of serving their sentence.

"Pre-trial detention shall be counted by the court at the time of punishment upon conviction to imprisonment day after day or according to the rules provided for in part one of this article. When appointing punishments not listed in part one of this article, the court, taking into account the preliminary detention, may mitigate the punishment or release the convicted person completely from his serving, "the text of the bill says..

The bill was adopted only on the second attempt - at first the initiative was supported only by 213 people's deputies.

As reported by the "Observer", according to official data at the beginning of 2017, according to the "Savchenko's law", more than 7.7 thousand prisoners were released.
