Tallinn hosts the International Conference. Lennart Meri. The representative of the Belarusian National Congress, the coordinator of the civil campaign "European Belarus", the former presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov assessed the political situation in the country.
- What is happening in Belarus now? What should I pay attention to?.
- The situation is very disturbing. In February of this year, protests against the tax began in the country (for parasitism -. Red. ), But, in general, against the regime of Lukashenka.
Since that time, we have not stopped arrests, trials and imprisonment of activists.
I call the situation alarming precisely because the EU prefers not to notice what is happening in our country. There are no strong statements from Brussels, they say more about sanctions, which gives Lukashenka's regime a carte blanche to continue repression.
- What would entail the coming to power of a pro-Western government?.
- If the elections were real, then we would already have a Belarusian government that would strengthen relations with the European Union. Since I represent the civil campaign "European Belarus", we are precisely this way and stick to it. But since we do not have elections, and they are unlikely to be held in the near future, therefore it is impossible to determine how strong the mood in support of Europe is.
Very much depends on the position of the European Union. Europe began to pay attention to military exercises "West-2017", which will be held in the fall on the territory of Belarus. But for some reason he does not pay attention to the fact that before these teachings the opposition is being cleared. Today the "patriots' case" is being fabricated, directed against the Belarusian patriots.
And this threatens the security of Europe.
- Do you have any complaints about the European Union?.
- I have a wish that Europe should see the real situation and take measures to protect its values. These values ??are destroyed in Belarus. Hence, they are destroyed and in Europe.
- Can the protests that have started turn into the Belarusian "Maydan"?.
- We have a very tough dictatorship. In 2010 there was a hard crackdown and beating people. Now we are also dispersing people and throwing them in jails. On a daily basis, courts are held, citizens of Belarus are imprisoned, criminal cases are being filed against patriots, leaders are kidnapped, like Mikalai Statkevich, are being killed in prison as Vladimir Neklyaev. Not to notice this is just a crime.
- Why do the Belarusians still do not want Lukashenka to be replaced by another person?.
- Belarusians want to replace Lukashenko, we simply do not have a mechanism that exists in Europe - the institution of elections. I assure you that, organize fair elections today, Lukashenka would not exist!.
