Russia's strategic goal in 2017 is the failure of Ukraine's attempts to become part of the European community.

This is stated in the annual analysis of threats to peace and stability, which was presented by the Director of National Intelligence of the United States, Dan Coates, which was published on the website of the agency.

As noted in the report, "Moscow will retain its influence on Kiev in order to thwart Ukraine's attempts to integrate into Western institutions".

"President Vladimir Putin is likely to exert pressure on Kiev through several channels, including through actions in eastern Ukraine, where Russia is arming the so-called separatists. Moscow also seeks to undermine the fragile economic stability of Ukraine and preserve the political splitting of this country, "predicts Coates.

According to the director of the National Intelligence Service, the Ukrainian opposition is inclined to political concessions to the Kremlin.

"The ongoing conflict in the east of Ukraine limits Kiev's readiness and ability to compromise, complicating the prospects for implementing the Minsk agreements. Russia largely controls the level of violence, the fluctuations of which it uses to exert pressure in the negotiation process, "says Coates.

As reported by the "Observer", earlier the head of the FBI called the greatest threat on Earth.
