Babies conceived in a test tube are not at greater risk of being born with underweight or birth defects than children conceived in a traditional way, say Japanese researchers.

But there are differences for pregnant women in terms of complications in the period of gestation. Specialists compared and analyzed data on pregnancy 54 thousand. Women who became pregnant in the normal way, and 1400 women - through artificial insemination. The number of pregnant women was 6% of all pregnancies in Japan in 2006.

It turned out that for infants there was no significant difference that could affect the health of children, such as low birth weight or birth defects. However, among women who became pregnant through artificial insemination, an increased risk of complications (5% compared with usual pregnancies - 1.5%) during pregnancy. This is a placenta previa, in which the placenta blocks the exit to the birth canal.

This condition is quite dangerous for pregnant women and most often requires in-patient monitoring of doctors, since it can lead to intrauterine bleeding and additional interference in the process of childbirth. Prevalence of the placenta occurs in the second and third trimester of pregnancy, scientists said.
