The number of the newspaper "Soviet Patriot", which is still hanging on the notice board in Pripyat, came out three days before the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The catastrophe turned the Ukrainian city into one of the darkest "ghosts" in the world.

The Washington Post writes about this, reminding that once in Pripyat there lived 50 thousand inhabitants, many of which were related to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. All of them were hastily evacuated the day after the explosion on the fourth energy block in 1986. Then the radiation spread to most countries of Northern Europe.

Once Pripyat with its high residential buildings, wide streets and squares, with hotels and cultural centers was a model of the Soviet working city. Today, it is a vivid example of how technology can lead to a catastrophe. But even in this role Pripyat has become a tourist destination for those who aspire for money to feel the taste of danger.

The publication writes that travel companies offer trips to a ghost town and places near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where the level of radiation is low enough to be able to stay there for a short time. However, the level of radioactive contamination is still very high and does not allow people to settle in a 30-kilometer zone.

Every year, nature tears off part of Pripyat. On the roofs of the houses grow small trees, their floors and walls are gradually destroyed due to rain, snow and temperature changes. Most homes are in such a decline that visitors are advised not to go inside. But many ignore this warning.

Yesterday, April 26, Ukraine honored the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. In Kiev, hundreds of candles were lit in memory of the victims of Chernobyl. Participants of the action laid them out in the form of an international radiation sign in memory of the heroes-liquidators and victims of the man-made disaster.

On April 26, 1986, at the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, an explosion occurred that caused one of the most large-scale man-made disasters in world history.

The employees of the station were the first to eliminate the consequences of the accident. Immediately during the explosion, only one person died, another one died in the morning from the injuries received. However, later 134 employees of the Chernobyl NPP and members of the rescue teams who were at the station during the explosion developed radiation sickness, within a period of several months 28 of them died.

From 1986 to 1992, according to official data, 600 thousand. Man, more than a million people were involved in the work in the 30-kilometer zone.
