British biologists have discovered a potential cause of the development of multiple sclerosis and found a protein, the appearance of which in the brain cells leads to their mass death. The results of research scientists were published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation.

During the study, scientists studied the differences in the structure of brain cells in healthy people and people with multiple sclerosis. In addition, scientists analyzed the differences in the chemical composition of cells in brain sections donated for the benefit of science by relatives of sick and healthy people and samples of tissues of mice that suffered from similar problems.

As a result, it turned out that the brain cells of all people and animals suffering from multiple sclerosis had one common quality - they contained an unusually large amount of Rab32 protein, absent in the neurons of healthy people.
