Operators of hyper-scalable data centers strengthen their positions in the cloud services market. This is evidenced by the data of analysts Synergy Research Group.

Hyperscale refers to companies that have thousands of servers in data centers. Leaders among such players are Amazon and Google, which owns millions of servers. According to Synergy Research for the fourth quarter of 2016, there are 24 hyper-scalable data center operators on the market. They have nearly 320 data centers, and many of these companies have a wide infrastructure in many countries.

In 2016 operators of hyper-scalable data centers controlled about 68% of the world market of cloud infrastructure services (IaaS, PaaS, private clouds) and 59% of the SaaS segment (software as a service). In 2012, the shares of such companies in these markets were about 47%.

Specialists note that companies with the largest number of data centers are leading by revenue in the sphere of cloud computing. Amazon, Microsoft and IBM have data centers in at least 45 cities and at least two sites in each of the four largest regions (North America, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, EMEA - Europe, Middle East, Africa).

These companies invest huge amounts of money in the development of computing platforms, leaving the "second echelon" competitors with fewer chances for success in the cloud industry.

However, hyper-scalable players struggling to increase market share have to pay increased bills for the expansion of data center infrastructure - servers, storage, network equipment, network security solutions and related software.

"Hyper-scalable operators now dominate the most diverse areas of the IT industry. They are changing the services market, thereby radically transforming the cost model for equipping IT infrastructures of enterprises, and influencing equipment suppliers. According to our forecasts, these factors will be aggravated within the next five years, "said John Dinsdale, analyst and scientific director of Synergy Research Group,.

According to IDC forecasts, in 2017 world expenses for servers, storage systems and Ethernet switches used for cloud services will amount to $ 41.7 billion, an increase of 15.3% compared to the previous year.
